Ugly Sweater Sunday
The First Congregational Church in Essex invites everyone to check out their local thrift shop or dig far back in their clothes closets and don the ugliest sweater they can find for "Ugly Sweater Sunday" on December 28. The fun service at 10 am will feature Christmas caroling and candlelight to close out the worship year 2014. For more information, contact the church at 860/767-8097 or visit www.essexucc.org.
Christmas Eve Candlelight Services
There will be two candlelight services on Christmas Eve, December 24 at The First Congregational Church in Essex, UCCat 6 Methodist Hill in Essex Village: one at 5:30 p.m., which is designed for families with young children and features Christmas carols and music performed by the youth of the church; and a second at 9:00 p.m., highlighted by music from the Senior Choir, organist Marsha Birch of Essex and harpist, Faith Leitner. A fire in a fire pit outside the entrance to the church will welcome all to both services. A special free will offering will benefit charities, including the Town of Essex Social Services.
On December 21, the First Congregational Church in Essex at 6 Methodist Hill in Essex Village sponsors a "Blue Christmas" service at 5:30 p.m. According to the church's pastor, Rev. Kenneth Peterkin, "For some in our community, the darkness of winter can bring a gloomy temperament or aching body. For others, the prospect of celebrating Christmas without a loved one can make the holiday a daunting task. We will acknowledge the blue feelings we may have and offer an enhanced healing service, similar to those that our church holds on the last Sunday of every month." Bring the family and get in the musical spirit of the season at the free Christmas Sing-Along on December 19 at 7 pm at The First Congregational Church in Essex, 6 Methodist Hill in Essex Village. Sing along to "Jingle Bells," Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer," Frosty The Snowman," "White Christmas" and many more holiday favorites. Cocoa will be served.
